Co-investment and syndication

Well-structured funding packages can significantly contribute to an SME’s success and co-investment/syndication often plays a crucial role.

A committed co-investor

Finance Wales is a committed co-investor ensuring Welsh SMEs secure the investment they need. We focus on building relationships with other investors such as:

  • Banks
  • Sector specific investors
  • Venture capital houses
  • Business angels

We frequently invest with xénos business angels.

Technology venture co-investments

Finance Wales is a particularly active co-investor in higher-risk/higher reward technology venture investments.

We invest seed and growth capital in innovative technology businesses with the ambition and potential to become international market leaders. We can also invest follow-on rounds as they grow.

We invest across a range of technology sectors including:

  • Engineering, electronics and optics
  • ICT, software and services
  • Life sciences
  • Medical technology/devices

Our relationships have a number of benefits for the technology companies we invest in, including:

  • Increasing the amount of available investment capital
  • Sector expertise and a wide network of contacts
  • Support to engage with other investors, commercial partners and new markets
  • In our experience having a local institutional investor can be valuable when attracting and working with investors from further away.
  • We've also co-invested with institutional investors pre-IPO or IPO to support the creation of some of Wales' newest listed companies Creo Medical Ltd., Diurnal Ltd., MedaPhor Ltd., and MidaTech Pharma Ltd. (acquired Q-Chip with a concurrent IPO).

We’ve invested alongside a number of leading investors, here are some recent examples:

Over the last ten years, the Technology Ventures team at Finance Wales has built up an impressive network of supportive co-investors. Through this network, we have been able to inject £145 million of private sector investment into our portfolio of high growth, IP rich, technology businesses.

These investors range from angels and high net worth individuals, through to sector-specific institutional investors and corporate investors from multinational businesses.
