Our process

For any SME looking to access commercial funding through Finance Wales they must first submit a formal application.

Making an application

Finance Wales invests on a commercial basis, so you must be able to demonstrate in your application a business case with good growth potential and clear business objectives.

We treat each potential investment individually, so making a decision on your application will depend on the type and size of the investment you need.

Before applying

It is important that we have a good understanding of who you are, what you are doing and how we can help. Before making an application we ask potential clients to read the following before speaking to us:

  • Investment criteria - This outlines your eligibility for investment as well as providing advice for your business plan application
  • Funding needs - If you are not sure what type of investment you need this section will clarify what we can offer you

For any help or questions at this stage of the process you can contact us.

Application and business plan

Your application should include a business plan, financial records and your management team's CVs. For more information on what to include in your business plan see our  investment criteria section.

We will need to know about your business, your financial situation and your investment requirements. Once we have received a signed copy of your application we can then proceed to the assessment stage.

Assessment

After assessing your application we'll arrange an initial meeting if your application presents an interesting and eligible potential investment opportunity. Our response time for your application will depend on the type and size of the investment you require.

  • For micro loans up to £10,000, we aim to make a decision within 2 working days of receiving all the information we require
  • For micro loans up to £50,000, we aim to make a decision within 7 working days of receiving all the information we require
  • For business loans over £50,000, we aim to make a decision within 6 weeks of receiving all the information we require
  • For larger, more complex equity deals we aim to make a decision within 3 months of receiving all the information we require

Usually once a decision has been made by a fund manager they are not open to appeal.

Due diligence

We price our deals based on the associated risk. This means we conduct a thorough assessment of all investment applications. We consider the market you operate in as well as your management team.

For larger, more complex investments deals we may liaise with external due diligence providers.

Approval

Once due diligence has been successfully completed and passed, we will consider the investment for approval.

Finance Wales uses a streamlined approval process which is tailored to the size of the investment. Any investment decision is made in a timely manner by local in-house decision makers with delegated authority.

Legal completion

We'll arrange all the necessary legal documentation and make the funds available.

After investing

One of our dedicated investment portfolio executives will work with you to support your growth plans.
